One of the most popular forms of insurance coverage are the individual dental insurance plans. It’s sold directly by the insurance company to the client. If you don’t have dental coverage from an employer, you may find that many companies do not offer dental insurance for individuals.
Why don’t insurance companies offer dental insurance to individuals ?
You need to understand the way that insurance works in order to understand why so many insurance providers do not offer these types of plans. When someone insures their home for instance, they (the insurance company) are playing a numbers game. The person pays a certain amount each month – let’s say $85 – and in exchange the insurance company pays for any damage to their home in case it blows up, burns down or some one drives a car through the side of it (don’t laugh it happens). Even though the $85 a month does not cover the cost of replacing or repairing the home the company knows that there are hundreds of other people that are paying thier monthly premiums that will never make a claim. So through this numbers game they are able to pay and still make a handsome profit.
On the other hand covering dental needs is quite different because there is much less randomness. Everyone needs a cleaning and check-up every six months. Nearly everyone will need a cavity filled occasionally and x-rays. Most people will have a root canal at some point. In the example above there are lots of people who never need thier home owners insurance but everyone needs dental services. This makes it harder for the insurance companies to make a profit and that’s why it can be hard to find dental plans for individuals.
